In 2014 Yoga Assets started training yoga teachers to “Teach Yoga Everywhere”.
Our training programs now cover four states and we have over 600 graduates who have each volunteered at least 10 hours teaching some form of yoga in Senior Centers, Schools, Hospitals, Addiction Recovery Facilities, Jails, and Homeless Shelters.
When searching for a place to do their Seva (Selfless Service) through yoga, we encourage our students to “go to their wounds”. Or, in other words, return to a place of pain or discomfort in your life and offer to serve.
In late 2017, I took my own advice and decided to serve in the Utah prison system. My Dad was an alcoholic who spent 15 years of his life there.
After few emails back and forth with the system, I was approved to teach my first yoga class in the Timpview Women’s Prison facility.
All the angst that I suffered as a teenager came back to me. As I stood at those gates once again, I felt physically ill.
And then…the gates opened.
I made my way to the gym, and rolled out a mat. The women came in, one by one. I met them, looked into their eyes, and knew I had found my Seva.
A few weeks later, I decided to make my commitment even bigger. I got permission to bring our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher training program into the prison.
With the help of Cynthia Wand, we are leading ten women to become 200-hour Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teachers by the end of 2018.
Some of them will teach on the outside when released. A couple of them are serving life sentences and will teach inside the prison walls.
Yoga Forward was formed to “take yoga where it isn’t”. Our plan is to take the benefits of yoga to places that we feel it can make a difference. The prison system is just one example of how we have witnessed first-hand the transforming effects of yoga.
We are currently committed to training Utah school teachers to bring mindfulness and movement breaks into the classrooms. Our goal is to support teachers in 55 schools in the coming school year.
Will you help us? We need funding for materials, props, books, and trainers.
Our goal is to train teachers (leaders) who will in turn, teach within their own organizations and communities. We’re out to create a ripple effect of well-being that will change lives for the better.
